About My Attic

Welcome to my attic.  Pull up a chair and make yourself at home, but mind the dust and cobwebs and be careful not to bump your head!  Unlocking the Attic is a blog for my creative writing exercises and fiction.  Some of the exercises are taken from my various writing books, while others are various writing competitions entries (the unsueccessful ones–sadly).

I’m hoping if I rummage around long enough up here I’ll find my long lost imagination and the mislaid sense of fun and adventure I had in an earlier phase of life. I’m so serious now, stodgy even–all business and professionalism.  How sorely I regret my lack of appreciation the precious gifts of youth.

Why was I in such a hurry to grow up?  In a bid for efficiency and decorum, I must have stuffed my imagination in a box with the tacky, hand-made Christmas decorations I deemed not classy enough for my tree.  Or maybe it is folded up in the steamer trunk that housed my horse tack and girlish obsession with all things equine.  Wrapped around my rusted unicyle?  Entwined in keys of my first typewriter? Shuffled in with the faded photos of summer camps and wild adventures at the lake?

Despite the thick film of dust and crumbs of decay, there’s promise up here amongst my boxes: gleaming promises of ideas and surprises, mystery and heroism, fun and frivolity.  I just have to tackle this attic one corner at a time, one box, then another, blow off the dust and unwrap each treasure with care.

Who knows what I’ll rediscover…
